A pilot needs to find the distance across a river. From point A, the angle to point B across the river is 40 degrees, and AB along the bank is 50 m. Find the river width:

  • 38.30 m, because width = 50 x cos(40) = 50 x 0.766 = 38.30 m, using cosine gives the adjacent side not the opposite
  • 32.14 m, because width = 50 x sin(40) = 50 x 0.6428 = 32.14 m, taking the sine of the angle for the width across
  • 41.95 m, because width = 50 x tan(40) = 50 x 0.839 = 41.95 m, using tangent with the adjacent bank distance of 50 m

but after have analized the drowning, the real drowing, after some calculations is different from that...the left side, is inclined whit negative value (le lef side gone to the right of the upper base, like that ________ \ \____________\) because the right angle is about 62.7 degrees so the long of the base of that triangol is little above 2.1, 7-2.01 =4.99 that means what I have wrote

What is the ratio of 5 feet to 30 inches?

  • 1 : 6
  • 5 : 3
  • 2 : 1

How can I do that??

Elia: You need first to convert feet to inch so 5 feet in 60 inch because 1 feet it's 12 inch so 5x12=60 (in metric system you need do divide 1 feet by 1 inch so 1feet=30.48cm 1inch=2.54cm so 30.48/2.54=12, now you moltiply 12 x 5 = 60). Than the task ask you what is the ratio of 5 feet to 30 inch so, you know that 5 feet is 60 inch, so the ratio of 60 inch to 30 inch is 60/30 = 2:1
