By degrees does it mean hours? sorry I'm confused.

JD2016: Most stuff in Maths is not obvious. Maths is all about tricks. When someone shows you the trick, you can understand it. Maths builds on previous learning. So if you miss out on the tricks early on in the process, it can hamper you badly later. E.g. missing a few days at school can leave you without some of the tricks you need later on. The teacher assumes you know those tricks.
