Module 1. Mathematics

A pinion gear with 16 teeth is driving a spur gear with 48 teeth at 120 RPM. Find the speed of the pinion gear.

  • 40 RPM
  • 144 RPM
  • 360 RPM

Explanation

Gear speeds are inversely proportional to tooth count. The 48-tooth spur runs at 120 RPM, so the 16-tooth pinion runs at 120 x 48/16 = 360 RPM. The smaller gear always turns faster, so an answer below 120 RPM cannot be correct.

Richiegeee asking:

quite embarrassed to ask, but can someone please explain the difference between pinion and spur gears?

48 teeth of spur gear is divided by the 16 teeth of pinion gear & the result will multiplied with rpm

A simple two gear system consists of two gears. Typically one gear is smaller while the other is larger. The smaller gear is normally called the pinion, while the larger gear is called the spur gear. Gear teeth are cut parallel to the shaft.

48/16=3 , 3x120=360
