What the Boeing 787 (GEnx) type training covers

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, widebody twinjet and the first Boeing airliner with a more-electric architecture, a composite fuselage, and fly-by-wire flight controls. This question bank follows a 787 type-rating and continuation-training course, organised by ATA chapter so revision maps directly onto the maintenance documentation.

Coverage spans the full systems syllabus: the electrical power system and the Common Core System (CCS) computing backbone, communications and navigation, autoflight and thrust management, hydraulics and the flight-control system, fuel, the nitrogen-generation/inert-gas system, fire protection and the APU, air conditioning and pressurisation, ice and rain protection, landing gear, structures, equipment, oxygen, doors and windows. The powerplant chapters address the GE GEnx turbofan — its full-authority digital engine control (FADEC), indicating, ignition and starting, air, oil and exhaust systems.

Suitable for initial type-rating preparation or recurrent knowledge checks.

Sample questions below are drawn live from the Boeing 787 (GEnx) question bank of 4 423 questions across 34 ATA chapters. The full timed practice quiz is per-chapter and needs an active subscription.

Other aircraft type ratings

Frequently asked questions

What is the Boeing 787 type rating?
The 787 type rating is the aircraft-specific authorisation that lets a licensed engineer work on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. For Part66 maintenance engineers it sits on top of a Category B1.1 or B2 licence and is earned through a Part-147-approved 787 type-training course followed by on-the-job training.
Which engine is covered in this question bank?
The GE GEnx high-bypass turbofan, the engine for which this training material was written. The 787 is also offered with the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000, but this question bank covers the GEnx installation: its FADEC controls, indicating, ignition and starting, oil and exhaust systems across the ATA 70-series chapters.
What makes the 787 different from earlier Boeing airliners?
The 787 introduced a more-electric architecture (electric cabin pressurisation and wing de-icing in place of engine bleed for most systems), a composite fuselage, fly-by-wire flight controls, and the Common Core System — a shared computing platform that hosts most aircraft functions. These changes make it a standalone type rating rather than a differences course from earlier Boeings.
Are the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 all covered?
Yes. The 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 share the same EASA type rating and are covered under one question bank, with notes where the longer variants differ.
Will this prepare me for the official 787 type-rating exam?
The questions use the same multiple-choice format as the Part-147 type-rating theoretical exam, the practice is timed to build exam pace, and coverage maps onto the approved syllabus by ATA chapter. The actual exam is sat at your Part-147 training organisation; this is a self-study tool.
