Module 1. Mathematics

17 degrees 49 minutes and 10 seconds added to 22 degrees 22 minutes and 59 seconds, equals

  • 39 degrees 11 minutes and 9 seconds.
  • 40 degrees 11 minutes and 69 seconds.
  • 40 degrees 12 minutes and 9 seconds.

goose87 asking:

By degrees does it mean hours? sorry I'm confused.

Not hours but angles.

360 degrees in a full circle.
60 minutes in 1 degree.
60 seconds in 1 minute.

Add the smallest units first (i.e. the seconds) 10+ 59=69 which is 1 minute and 9 seconds. That 1 minute is carried to the next biggest units - the minutes. 49 +22 =71 plus the 1 carried =72. 72 minutes is 1 degree and 12 minutes. You carry that 1 degree to the next biggest unit which is the degrees. 17 +22=39, plus the 1 degree carried forward = 40 degrees.
So answer is 40 degrees 12 minutes and 9 seconds.

Has anyone on this passed the Maths exam yet? Are the questions fairly accurate on this?

You will not have these questions on exams, they will be different.

Most stuff in Maths is not obvious.
Maths is all about tricks. When someone shows you the trick, you can understand it. Maths builds on previous learning. So if you miss out on the tricks early on in the process, it can hamper you badly later. E.g. missing a few days at school can leave you without some of the tricks you need later on. The teacher assumes you know those tricks.
