Module 1. Mathematics

What is 10! / 8!?

  • 1.25, because 10/8 = 1.25, dividing the arguments of the factorials gives 1.25 which is not how factorial division works
  • 2, because 10 - 8 = 2, subtracting the factorial arguments gives the difference but not the ratio of factorials here
  • 90, because 10!/8! = 10 x 9 = 90, the remaining factors after cancellation are 10 and 9 which multiply to 90

Explanation

Since 10! = 10 * 9 * 8!, the 8! cancels with the denominator, leaving 10 * 9 = 90. Factorials cannot be divided by simply dividing or subtracting their arguments, so 1.25 and 2 are wrong methods.
