Module 3. Electrical fundamentals

Which is a high-pass filter?

  • L type with series L and shunt C.
  • L type with series C and shunt L.
  • Π type with series C and L.

Explanation

A high-pass filter must pass high frequencies and block low ones. Placing a capacitor in series (low reactance at high frequency) with an inductor as the shunt arm (low reactance at low frequency, shorting them out) achieves this, so the L-type with series C and shunt L is the high-pass configuration.

It is greek PI.

If given that is PI, then it is not correct answer.

High pass filter using capacitor series into circuit, and inductor shunt into earth/ground/neutral.

Capacitor allow higher frequency to pass on (to circuit), blocking lower frequency.
While inductor prevent higher frequency escape(into ground), allowing most of lower frequency return to ground. (DC also)

I think correct answer should be the second one.
See Fig 10-221 on page 10-221 of FAA 8083-30 - Chapter 10 - Basic Electricity.
