Module 13. Aircraft aerodynamics, structures and systems

In ADF system, Goniometer

  • combines the signals from fixed loop antenna and sense antenna
  • effectively simulates a rotating loop antenna
  • alternately selects signals from loop antenna and sense antenna

Explanation

In a fixed-loop ADF the goniometer takes the signals from the crossed fixed loops and, through its rotor windings, reproduces electrically the effect of physically rotating a single loop antenna. This lets the receiver find the directional null without any moving aerial, effectively simulating a rotating loop to determine the bearing.

sasna asking:

goniometer is used with fixed loop antenna....???????

I'm not avionics expert but as I remember, in past, ADF loops antenna was rotating, but now, principle of rotating antenna is simulated by two non rotating loop antennas which are positioned perpendicular to each other.

please do not guess...refer and confirm. two fixed loops in long and lat axis are connected to the field of goniometer, which are commonly used in ADF

I don't guess, I just telling you what I remember from theory. You can take my word in mind or not. If you have another opinion about that question and can provide some proof for that, I will be happy to correct it.
