Module 13. Aircraft aerodynamics, structures and systems

In a dual FMS, a failure of one computer will result in

  • COMPLETELY blank display on one CDU
  • down-grade of the landing category
  • no effect on the CDU

Explanation

A dual FMS provides redundancy by running two independent flight-management computers. If one computer fails the remaining computer continues to drive both control display units, so the crew see no loss on the CDU and the system simply reverts from independent to single-source operation.

sam612 asking:

In other QA it indicated that 'COMPLETELY blank display on one CDU' was the correct answer ??

In dual FMS we have two computers. When first computer fails, second computer will replace it. So "no effect on the CDU" is correct answer.

I agree with trap2307. If one computer fails, the other one takes over so there will be no effect on the CDU.
The other question is asking about failure of the FMS itself where the CDU will go blank

The word COMPLETEY makes a) incorrect. The word CDU is displayed on the CDU and it can be selected to a different source.
