Module 13. Aircraft aerodynamics, structures and systems

The VSWR of a VHF system with a forward power of 100W and a reflected power of 4W will be

  • 1.5:1
  • 2:1
  • 2.5:1

Explanation

The voltage reflection coefficient is the square root of the power ratio, so the square root of 4/100 equals 0.2. VSWR is (1 plus 0.2) divided by (1 minus 0.2), which is 1.2/0.8, giving 1.5:1. This low ratio indicates a well-matched antenna feeder.

VSWR = (1 + square_root(Prev / Pfor)) / (1 - square_root(Prev / Pfor))

Prev = forward power
Pfor = reflected power
