When drilling out a rivet, use a drill
- larger than the rivet hole.
- same size as the hole.
- smaller than the rivet hole.
Explanation
A rivet is drilled out with a drill the same nominal size as the rivet shank/hole so the head is removed without enlarging or damaging the parent hole. An oversize drill would open the hole and oblige a larger replacement rivet, while an undersize drill leaves material that makes head removal difficult.

thought it was smaller than hole when drilling out the rivet??
