Module 15. Gas turbine engine

A free turbine is

  • not directly connected to the power output shaft.
  • connected directly to the propeller and compressor.
  • connected directly to the power output shaft.

Explanation

A free turbine is not mechanically linked to the gas-generator/compressor spool; instead it is connected to the power output shaft, extracting energy from the gas stream to drive the propeller or load. This independence lets the output shaft turn at a speed unrelated to the gas-generator speed.

vinn787 asking:

how is a free turbine connected to power output shaft

Free turbine is not connected directly to propeller, it is connected to reduction gearbox through power output shaft.
