Module 15. Gas turbine engine

A gas turbine engine is stopped by closing

  • H.P cock.
  • L.P cock.
  • throttle valve.

Explanation

A gas turbine is normally shut down by closing the high-pressure (HP) cock, which cuts fuel downstream of the HP pump so the pump remains primed and the burners are starved cleanly. Closing the LP cock instead would starve and damage the HP pump, so the HP cock is the correct shutdown control.

simontay asking:

I thought the answer for this is HP cock. Closing the LP cock would cavitate the HP pump everytime you shut down.

? I thought its switched off by the fuel shut off switch who controls the feul fire shutoff VLV. So basically the engine stops by fuel starvation. Would want to get to cocky about it... or are we talking other engines than pylon mounted gas turbines?
