How is a D.T.I. initially set up?
- The gauge plunger should be fully extended and then the needle zeroed.
- The gauge plunger should be partly depressed and the needle zeroed.
- The needle should be zeroed first, then the plunger fully extended.
Explanation
A dial test indicator is set up with its plunger partly depressed against the reference surface so it has travel available in both directions, then the dial is rotated to zero the needle. This mid-range pre-load lets the instrument read movement either way; a fully extended plunger would have no inward travel.
