The data gives a turning torque for the bearings alone, read before the lip seal is fitted. Preload is instead adjusted with the seal in place until that figure is reached. What preload results?

  • More than the specified preload
  • Less than the specified preload
  • The specified preload exactly

Explanation from PART66Online

A bearing preload reading is taken before the lip seal is fitted, because the seal's own drag adds to the torque being measured and corrupts it. With the seal in place its drag makes up part of the specified figure, so the bearing's own share, and with it the preload, stops short of the specification. The drag adds to the reading, not to the bearing, so the preload is neither exact nor high.

Actually, the specified torque is for the bearings alone, so with the seal fitted part of the reading is seal drag and the bearings themselves supply less, which gives less than the specified preload. For example, if the specification is 10 units and the seal drag is 3, adjustment stops at a reading of 10 while the bearings account for only 7.
