When tapping blind holes
- a set of three taps is used.
- a set of two taps is used.
- a single bottoming tap is used.
Explanation from PART66Online
Tapping a blind hole uses the full set of three taps: taper to start, second (intermediate) to advance the thread, and plug (bottoming) to cut a full thread close to the bottom of the hole. The taper tap alone cannot form a usable thread to the base of a blind hole, hence all three are needed.
