Module 11. Aeroplane aerodynamics, structures and systems

The CSD or IDG speed governor setting

  • is not allowed to be adjusted.
  • is adjusted with the engine stationary.
  • is adjusted with the engine running.

Explanation

A constant speed drive (CSD) or integrated drive generator (IDG) holds the generator at constant rpm so it produces a fixed 400 Hz. The speed governor controls output frequency, so its setting is trimmed with the engine running, observing the live frequency, until the correct value is achieved. A static check cannot show the speed actually delivered to the generator.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THE ENGINES ARE STOPPED WHEN YOU ADJUST THE CSD. THE
CSD ADJUSTMENT PUTS MAINTENANCE PERSONS IN THE DANGEROUS ZONE
THAT IS AROUND THE ENGINE INLET. ENGINE SUCTION CAN CAUSE INJURY TO
PERSONS.
