Explanation

Normal rivet pitch, the spacing between adjacent rivets, is commonly taken as about 4D for a typical joint, balancing joint strength against material weakening from too many closely spaced holes. While the absolute minimum pitch is around 3D, the usual or normal spacing applied in practice is 4D; 2D would crowd the rivets and risk tear-out between holes.
