What Category B1 covers

Category B1 (mechanical) permits release to service following maintenance on aircraft structure, powerplant and mechanical and electrical systems, plus work on avionic line-replaceable units requiring only simple tests. It is split by airframe and engine type into B1.1, B1.2, B1.3 and B1.4.

Frequently asked questions

How many modules do I need for a B1 licence?
A B1.1 (turbine aeroplane) or B1.2 (piston aeroplane) licence requires 13 of the 17 modules; B1.3 and B1.4 (helicopters) require 12. Modules 1 to 10 are common to all four; the difference is the airframe module (11 for aeroplanes, 12 for helicopters) and the engine module (15 turbine, 16 piston, plus 17 propeller for aeroplanes).
What is the difference between B1.1 and B1.2?
Both cover aeroplanes and share Modules 1 to 11 and 17. B1.1 adds Module 15 (Gas Turbine Engines) for turbine aircraft; B1.2 adds Module 16 (Piston Engine) instead.
