Three classic exam-day traps

Right extinguisher for the wrong fire

Water on an electrical or brake fire is a classifier-killer. CO2 suits electrical and engine fires, dry powder suits wheel and brake fires, water spray is for solids only.

Rivet edge distance & pitch

Edge distance should be not less than 2D (rivet diameter) and rivet pitch sits between 3D and 10D. Confusing the two — or forgetting the limit is a minimum, not a target — costs marks every sitting.

Dye penetrant vs magnetic particle

Dye penetrant works on any non-porous material but only catches defects open to the surface. Magnetic particle is limited to ferromagnetic parts and reaches just below the surface — pick by material, not by habit.

What Module 7 covers — in plain English

Module 7 of the EASA Part-66 syllabus is the most practically-oriented of the certifying modules: it codifies the workshop, hangar and flight-line skills that turn theory into a maintenance action a licensed engineer can sign off. Safety procedures, tool selection, fits and clearances, riveting, electrical wiring, sheet metal and composite work, weight and balance, aircraft handling, defect inspection and the documentation that closes the loop — all of it sits inside Module 7. Examiners weight it accordingly: it carries one of the longest multiple-choice papers in the syllabus.

The exam includes a written-essay component in every category. Category A candidates sit 76 multiple-choice questions in 95 minutes plus two essays. B1 and B3 candidates sit 80 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes plus essays; B2 and B2L candidates sit 60 multiple-choice questions in 75 minutes because several mechanical sub-sections (riveting, pipes and hoses, springs, bearings, transmissions, control cables, sheet metal) drop out of their syllabus. Allow a full 40 minutes for the essay portion on top of the MCQ time when planning your revision schedule.

Knowledge levels are demanding. Safety precautions, workshop practices, tools and EWIS are level 3 for B1/B2/B3 candidates — you must be able to apply the theory in a practical situation, explain procedures and use technical terminology correctly. Which type of extinguisher can be used for an electric fire?

CO2 is non-conductive and leaves no residue, so it is the standard choice for live electrical fires. Foam and water both conduct and create a shock hazard to the operator. Once the supply is isolated, the fire may be re-classified by what is actually burning.

When riveting, the distance from the edge to the rivet (land) should not be less than

Eddy currents are induced by an AC coil and decay rapidly with depth (the skin effect), so the method picks up surface and shallow sub-surface defects in any electrically conductive material. Penetration depth is set by the probe frequency — lower frequency reaches deeper.

How many questions are in the EASA Part-66 Module 7 exam?
The number depends on your licence category. Category A candidates sit 76 multiple-choice questions, while Category B1 candidates sit 80 multiple-choice questions. Both papers also include a written-essay component in addition to the multiple-choice questions.
What is the pass mark for EASA Part-66 Module 7?
The pass mark for Module 7 is 75%, the same as every other EASA Part-66 module. Because Module 7 also carries an essay component, you must reach the required standard on the essay as well as the multiple-choice paper to pass the module overall. Practising a wide range of questions is the surest way to stay above the 75% line.
How long is the Module 7 exam?
Category A candidates are allowed 95 minutes for the 76 multiple-choice questions, and Category B1 candidates are allowed 100 minutes for the 80 multiple-choice questions. Additional time is allocated for the written-essay portion on top of the multiple-choice time. Working at roughly one question per minute leaves a small buffer for review.
Which EASA licence categories require Module 7?
Module 7, Maintenance Practices, is required across Cats A, B1, B2, B2L and B3. It is one of the broadest modules in the syllabus because the workshop, tooling and inspection skills it covers apply to every certifying engineer. The depth of some mechanical sub-sections varies by category, but the module itself is common to all of them.
What does Module 7 cover, and what do students find hardest?
Module 7 codifies the hands-on skills of maintenance: safety precautions, hand and precision tools, electrical wiring (EWIS), riveting, and inspection and non-destructive testing. Students most often lose marks matching the right extinguisher to the right fire — CO2 for electrical, dry powder for wheel and brake fires, water spray for solids only. Rivet edge distance (not less than 2D) and pitch are frequently confused, and candidates forget these are minimums, not targets. The NDI section trips people up too: dye penetrant works on any non-porous material but only for surface-breaking defects, while magnetic particle is limited to ferromagnetic parts.
Does Module 7 include essay questions?
Yes. Under Regulation (EU) 2023/989, Module 7 is the only EASA Part-66 module still examined by essay — Modules 9 and 10 became multiple-choice only in 2024. The UK CAA retains essays for Modules 7, 9 and 10. You can review worked model essays on our Module 7 essay questions page.
