The area of a triangle is half the base times the perpendicular height. The base is 3 cm, and the perpendicular height, measured from the apex down to the extended base line (the dashed line), is 4 cm: A = 1/2 x 3 x 4 = 6 cm^2. The 6 cm side slopes, so it is not the height: 1/2 x 3 x 6 = 9 cm^2 is wrong, and 3 x 4 = 12 cm^2 forgets the half.

Why is it 6? If you go the long way and calculate with pythogorous theorem and from the whole triangle area substract the smaller triangle area you get roughly 9 cm^2
