In the Vickers and Brinell hardness tests the full load is held on the indenter for a specified dwell time, commonly taken as about 15 seconds, so that the material finishes deforming and a stable, repeatable impression is produced before the load is removed and the impression measured. Too short a dwell would give an inconsistent reading.

This question is unclear, as contact time is different depending on ferrous or non-ferrous metals.
