Module 11. Aeroplane aerodynamics, structures and systems

When an aircraft is heading due north (magnetic) towards a VOR station the reference and variable signals will be

  • 270 degrees out of phase.
  • in phase.
  • 180 degrees out of phase.

Explanation

VOR phase difference equals the radial bearing FROM the station. An aircraft heading due north toward the station is approaching from the south, i.e. on the 180-degree radial, so the variable and reference 30 Hz signals are 180 degrees out of phase.
