Module 11. Aeroplane aerodynamics, structures and systems

Ailerons control the aircraft in the

  • directional plane.
  • lateral plane.
  • longitudinal plane.

Explanation

Ailerons move differentially to create a rolling moment about the longitudinal axis, controlling the aircraft in roll, which is the lateral plane of control. The elevator handles pitch in the longitudinal plane and the rudder handles yaw in the directional plane. Ailerons therefore provide lateral (roll) control.

Aeromechanic asking:

What is the difference between the axis and the plane . Aileron roll is provided along the longitudinal axis. Does this occurs in the lateral plane ?

Axis is perpendicular to plane, so yes.
