Module 13. Aircraft aerodynamics, structures and systems

Automatic trim is used to

  • allow full authority to be regained by the aileron
  • maintain level flight
  • prevents standing loads on the elevator

Explanation

Automatic (auto) trim continuously zeroes the standing aerodynamic load held by the autopilot's pitch servo, repositioning the trim surface so the elevator returns to neutral hinge load. This keeps the servo within its authority and avoids a sudden out-of-trim pitch when the autopilot disconnects. It is a load-relief function, not a means of holding level flight.
