A passive sensor

  • does not require power.
  • requires dc excitation.
  • requires ac power input.

Explanation from PART66Online

A passive sensor generates its own output signal from the measured quantity and needs no external excitation supply, for example a thermocouple or piezoelectric device. An active sensor, by contrast, requires a dc or ac excitation to operate.
