Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Which will weigh the least?

  • 98 parts of dry air and 2 parts of water vapour.
  • 50 parts of dry air and 50 parts of water vapour.
  • 35 parts of dry air and 65 parts of water vapour.

Explanation

Water vapour is lighter than dry air because a water molecule is less massive than the average nitrogen or oxygen molecule it displaces. The mixture richest in water vapour, 35 parts dry air to 65 parts vapour, is therefore the least dense and weighs the least for a given volume.

Yes, dry air is heavier. So why you don't understand the answer?

Water vapor weighs less than dry air. Water vapor weighs 5/8 of dry air. Thus more water vapor, the lighter the air is.
