Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Low wing loading

  • increases stalling speed, landing speed and the landing run.
  • increases lift, stalling speed and overall maneuverability.
  • decreases stalling speed, landing speed and landing run.

Explanation

Wing loading is weight per unit wing area; low wing loading means a large wing relative to weight, so the required lift is generated at a lower speed. This lowers the stalling speed and therefore the approach and landing speeds and shortens the landing run.

kiama asking:

what is low wing loading

wing loading = loaded weight of aircraft / area of the wing.
