Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

What effect would a forward CG have on an aircraft on landing?

  • Increase stalling speed.
  • Reduce the stalling speed.
  • No effect on the landing.

Explanation

A forward centre of gravity increases the nose-down pitching moment, so the tailplane must produce a greater downward balancing load. This added download is effectively extra weight the wing must support, raising the lift required and therefore the stalling speed, which is why a forward CG gives a faster approach speed.

Abarroso asking:

Can anyone explain?

A forward CG would require the tail of the aircraft to exert more download to keep the nose level. This will increase the wing loading and thus the aircraft would stall at a higher speed.
