The amount of thrust produced by a jet engine or a propeller can be calculated using

  • Newton's 3rd law.
  • Newton's 2nd law.
  • Newton's 1st law.

Thrust is produced by accelerating a mass of air rearwards, and the force equals the rate of change of momentum, which is Newton's second law (force = mass flow times acceleration). Newton's third law explains the reaction direction, but the magnitude of thrust is calculated from the second law.
