Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Airflow over the upper surface of the wing generally

  • flows toward the tip.
  • flows towards the root.
  • flows chordwise from leading to trailing edge.

Explanation

On the upper surface the lower pressure draws air inward, so the flow tends to move spanwise toward the root, whereas on the higher-pressure lower surface it spills outward toward the tip. This pressure-driven spanwise difference is what rolls up into the trailing tip vortices.

Jordi asking:

why not towards the tip?

why? someone could explain ? its because the effect of induced drag ? so the airflow flows from the downside of the wings trough the tip and than it goes towards the root? help

yeah exactly. if you imagine the movement of the air vortex at the wing tip, it causes a movement of air from the bottom surface to the upper surface of the wing; directly it causes air from the bottom to move towards the tip and air on the top to move towards the root.
