Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

On a very hot day with ambient temperature higher than ISA, the pressure altitude is 20,000 ft. How much will the density altitude be?

  • exactly 20,000ft.
  • greater than 20,000ft.
  • less than 20,000ft.

Explanation

Density altitude is pressure altitude corrected for temperature, and warmer-than-standard air is less dense. On a hot day the thinner air behaves like a higher altitude, so the density altitude is greater than the 20,000 ft pressure altitude, degrading engine and wing performance accordingly.

Why is this?

Hey!

Density Altitude is pressure altitude corrected for temperature and humidity. Assuming constant humidity ISA or above temperature will further thin the air for a given pressure altitude thus making the density altitude higher.
