Module 3. Electrical fundamentals

An inductor has 1,000 turns of wire and a cross sectional area of 0.001m2. If the core has a permeability of 0.000,001 and the coil is 0.1m. What is the value of the inductor?

  • 100microH.
  • 100mH.
  • 10mH.

Explanation

Inductance of a coil is L = micro*N^2*A / l. Substituting: (0.000001 * 1000^2 * 0.001) / 0.1 = (1e-6 * 1e6 * 0.001) / 0.1 = 0.001 / 0.1 = 0.01H = 10mH. The result scales with the square of turns and the core permeability, and inversely with the magnetic path length.

Hey.
L = (μr * N^2 * A) / l = 0.000001 * 1000^2 * 0.001 / 0.1 = 0.01H = 10mH
μr - permeability
N - turns
A - x-sectional area
l - lenght
