Module 3. Electrical fundamentals

A small air gap between magnetic poles results

  • in a weaker field than a large air gap, for the same magnetising force.
  • in a stronger field than a large air gap, for the same magnetising force.
  • in the same field as a large air gap, for the same magnetising force.

Explanation

Air has a high reluctance compared with iron, so a wider air gap drops more of the available magnetomotive force and weakens the field. A small air gap presents less reluctance, so for the same magnetising force more flux is established and the field between the poles is stronger.

Anyone can explain ?
