Three inductors 10 mH, 5 mH and 20 mH are connected in parallel. What is the total inductance?

  • Without knowing the coupling factor the total inductance cannot be found.
  • 2.86mH.
  • 1.35mH.

Explanation from PART66Online

For inductors in parallel (no mutual coupling), 1/L = 1/L1 + 1/L2 + 1/L3. Here 1/10 + 1/5 + 1/20 = 0.1 + 0.2 + 0.05 = 0.35, so L = 1/0.35 ~ 2.86mH. As with parallel resistors, the total is always less than the smallest branch (5mH), confirming the answer.
