A starter generator has a

  • low resistance series field and a low resistance shunt field.
  • low resistance series field and a high resistance shunt field.
  • high resistance series field and a low resistance shunt field.

A starter-generator combines two modes. For starting it acts as a series motor, needing a low-resistance series field to carry the heavy starting current and give high torque. For generating it uses a high-resistance shunt field that draws little current and allows fine voltage regulation. Hence low-resistance series plus high-resistance shunt.

You need a low resistance series field coil so that the current in the main windings in the armature can be allowed to reach higher values as this is the same current responsible for excitation. Conversely, you need a high resistance shunt field coil to leave higher currents to the load.
