Module 3. Electrical fundamentals

In a an DC motor, the rotation of the MNA

  • is opposite to the rotation of the armature.
  • is slightly less speed than the rotation of the armature.
  • is the same as the rotation of the armature.

Explanation

In a motor, armature reaction shifts the magnetic neutral axis (MNA) backwards, against the direction of armature rotation. This is the reverse of a generator, where the MNA shifts forward with rotation, because the armature current direction relative to the field differs between motoring and generating.

tijaku asking:

MNA rotates in the same direction than the armature, right?

Hello.

The field in a motor reacts to the armature current by 'distorting' in the opposite direction to the armature - called armature reaction.

I think this is a problem of wording.
The MNA is displaced i.e. moved in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation. If the armature rotation is clockwise, the the MNA is some number of degrees behind, in the anti-clockwise direction, but everything still rotates clockwise. The wording could lead you to believe that the armature rotates clockwise and the MNA rotates anti-clockwise.
