y = 1/x is a rectangular hyperbola. Its gradient dy/dx = -1/x^2 is negative for every x, so the curve never levels off and has no turning point. It falls in two separate branches, one in the first quadrant and one in the third, with the axes as asymptotes.

Why not? Take a paper and try to plot it. You will see a result. This is the only way how to understand, you should plot it.
