Anodised surfaces are soft and easily damaged, so only non-abrasive, compatible tools such as aluminium wool and a fibre-bristle brush are acceptable. Steel wool, brass or stainless wire brushes would scratch through the oxide film and introduce dissimilar-metal particles that promote corrosion.
