Module 11. Aeroplane aerodynamics, structures and systems

Which instrument are most likely to damage if you have a rapid drop in pressure, when carrying out a pitot-static leak check?

  • Air speed indicator.
  • Altimeter.
  • Vertical speed indicator.

Explanation

A sudden drop in pressure during a pitot-static leak check most readily damages the vertical speed indicator, whose sensitive diaphragm and calibrated metering leak react sharply to rapid rate changes. Pressure must always be applied and released slowly to protect the VSI in particular.

Harys asking:

Can you please explain why its not altimeter ?
