Module 3. Electrical fundamentals

How many turns does the secondary winding of a 2:1 step-up transformer have?

  • Less than primary.
  • More than primary.
  • Less turns but with thicker wire.

Explanation

In a step-up transformer the secondary voltage is higher than the primary, and voltage is proportional to the number of turns. A 2:1 step-up therefore has twice as many turns on the secondary as the primary, so the secondary has more turns than the primary.
