Vortex generators are fitted to

  • move transition point rearwards.
  • move the transition point forwards.
  • delay the onset of boundary layer separation.

Explanation

Vortex generators are small vanes that create vortices mixing high-energy free-stream air into the boundary layer. This re-energised, more turbulent boundary layer resists the adverse pressure gradient longer, delaying separation and improving control effectiveness at high angles of attack.
