Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Mach number is

  • the ratio of the aircrafts TAS to the speed of sound at the same atmospheric conditions.
  • the ratio of the aircrafts IAS to the speed of sound at the same atmospheric conditions.
  • the ratio of the aircrafts TAS to the speed of sound at sea level.

Explanation

Mach number is true airspeed divided by the local speed of sound at the same altitude and temperature as the aircraft. It must use TAS (not IAS, which depends on density) and the local speed of sound (not the sea-level value), because the speed of sound varies with temperature.

arifadli8 asking:

what TAS mean???
