Module 8. Basic aerodynamics

Mach trim operates

  • along the longitudinal axis.
  • along the lateral axis.
  • to reduce Dutch roll.

Explanation

Mach trim addresses the nose-down pitch change (tuck-under) caused by the aft movement of the centre of pressure at high Mach number, working in the fore-and-aft (longitudinal) sense. It is a pitch/longitudinal function and is unrelated to lateral control or Dutch roll, which are directional/lateral matters.
