Explanation

Mutual flux linkage depends on the cosine of the angle between the coil axes. With the coils set at 90 degrees the flux from one coil runs parallel to the plane of the other, so no flux threads it and the linkage is zero. Maximum linkage would occur only when the coils are coaxial.

The coils must be parallel for maximum flux linkages. Coupling factor reduces as angular difference increases.
