Module 1. Mathematics

Dividing 4 1/2 by 2 1/6 gives the answer of

  • 25/12.
  • 54/26.
  • 21/3.

Explanation

Convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions: 4 1/2 = 9/2 and 2 1/6 = 13/6. Dividing means multiplying by the reciprocal: (9/2) x (6/13) = 54/26, which simplifies to 27/13, roughly 2.08. Note 54/26 is the correct (if unreduced) value of the division.

4 1/2 = 9/2
2 1/6 = 13/6
9/2 / 13/6 = 9*6 / 2/13 = 54/26

The confusing thing here is that the answer has not been simplified! You wouldn't normally leave 54/26 as the answer - it can be reduced to 27 /13 or 2 1/13 which LOOKS like the third answer but isn't.
