In a jack with a ram only on one side and hydraulic fluid applied from both sides

  • the ram will remain stationary, since equal hydraulic fluid pressures cancel on both sides of it.
  • the ram will move away from the side where the ram is due to pressure on differential areas.
  • the ram will move to the side where the ram is, due to pressure acting on differential areas.

Explanation from PART66Online

With fluid at equal pressure on both faces, force equals pressure times area, so the side without the rod (full piston area) develops more force than the rod side (annular, smaller area). The net force therefore pushes the piston toward the rod side, so the ram moves to the side where the ram emerges.
