A body which is allowed to expand when heated, expands past the pressure imposed on it and
- a force acts.
- heat is lost.
- work is done.
Explanation
When a heated body expands against the pressure acting on it, it pushes its surroundings back over a distance, and force acting through distance means work is done by the gas. This is the basis of work output in heat engines, where expanding gas does mechanical work.
