Module 2. Physics

The centre of gravity of an aircraft is adjusted by two weights, 10 kg and 5 ckg plaed 4m and 2 m aft of the c of g. To what position must a 20 kg weight be added to balance the c of g?

  • 2.5m.
  • 1.5m.
  • 3.0m.

Explanation

The two existing weights produce a moment about the c of g of (10 kg x 4 m) + (5 kg x 2 m) = 50 kg.m aft. To balance, the 20 kg weight must create an equal and opposite moment, so its distance is 50 divided by 20, giving 2.5 m on the forward side.

Because (10×4)+(5×2) = 20×2.5

Actually it was (10×9.81×4)+(5×9.81×2) = 20×9.81×2.5 , but it works either way

Weight arm momentum
10kg 4m 40
5kg 2m 10

Total aft 50 then
20kg 2.5m 50
