Module 2. Physics

As a block of ice is melted (to 4 degrees C). Its volume

  • stays same.
  • decreases.
  • increases.

Explanation

Water is unusual in that it reaches its maximum density at about 4 degreesC, so as ice melts and warms toward 4 degreesC the same mass occupies a smaller volume. The volume therefore decreases over this range rather than increasing as most substances would.

Ice is less densier than liquid water so it means that, having the same mass for solid and liquid water, ice has an higher value of volume while water a smaller one.
